I have been building a DIY sound system for a few years and have recently achieved a sound quality I had not imagined possible, such that I am now able to distinguish between excellent and superb recordings and to crave the latter. For example, I am able to fully enjoy the Dutoit Pictures at an Exhibition and Firebird, but not his Planets, the shortcomings of which recording you describe well. I'm excited to try the RPO Planets and your other recommendations, as I think we share many preferences. Many thanks!

I got mine as a regular CD. But with the one exception of the SACD, all Planets/Handley records (covers shown above) seem to be the same, just with different covers.

I don't really have a favorite among the ones I own: Dutiot, Ozawa, Mehta, Previn, Boult (1970). This Handley recording is available on the cheap download via a box set called Big English Box (can be found at Classics Select for $.99 US). There are so many good Planets out there that I had to stop acquiring them.
